Black Mother of pearl has a oil slick type appearance that is very hard to capture in a photo.
Also black pearl does have some white pearl as well. So the piece you receive might not be 100% black.
It is called simply,..black shell ,...here in Bali. They grow this way,...the exterior of the shell is a pealescent black color,....then when carved out,..sometimes the underside can be closer in color to the top black shell,...or white,.. closer to that of Mother of Pearl. Our carvers say it depends on the age of the shell itself.
